Meet Tyler!

Story Time is soon to start at the Arboretum!  This is one of my favorite youth events in the Children’s Garden!  Story Time is free to the public and will start this Wednesday (June 9th) and run for 8 consecutive weeks.  Children and their chaperones are encouraged to arrive at 10:00 a.m.  for a nature-themed story and then activities/play time in the garden.

This summer, we were fortunate enough to hire a summer intern to lend a helping hand with all our youth programs.  Below is an article about our intern, Tyler Franklin, from the Arboretum’s May e-newsletter.

(If you do not receive our e-newsletter and would like to, please visit http://www.cedarvalleyarboretum.org/newsletter.asp.)

Tyler Franklin began work as Arboretum Summer Intern in early May.  He is a UNI senior from Palo, Iowa, currently majoring in Ecology and Systematics, with minors in Earth Science and Botany.  He is familiar with the Arboretum, and was a volunteer at the last Fall Harvest Festival–you may have met Tyler leading children’s games or juggling.

When asked what he likes most about work at the Arboretum, he responded that he loves the good hard work and lack of stress.  Volunteers who have been working in the gardens report he is quick to perceive any need for assistance and gives willing help.  Mollie has many projects lined up for Tyler.  He has already established a new aquarium (awaiting fish) and a terrarium in the Education Center, and is planning a vegetable garden for the Children’s Garden.  He also hopes to adopt a community garden.

The paid summer internship is planned for approximately 12 weeks.  However, Tyler’s response to the inquiry of how long he would be working with us was “YEARS!” We hope so.  Welcome, Tyler!

See you in the gardens.
