Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens

Windy City

I was fortunate enough to get away to Chicago for a few days early last week.  Downtown Chicago is always one of my favorite spots for garden touring and this summer’s display was no exception!

One of my favorite streets to see top-notch annual displays is Michigan Avenue between the Drake Hotel and Millennium Park.  The street medians and flowerbeds outside the shops are always filled with color, textures and interesting plant combinations.  And what I love the most is that the plants used are often the same annuals we can find in our local garden centers!  Here are a few of my favorites:

While there were a few tropical plants used in this bed, the main stars are red coleus, pink dahlias, purple Brazilian verbena and a yellow African daisy.  Common annuals, but look so lush and inviting when planted in mass!

To add some interest to these coleus and impatiens, a succulent was incorporated – how fun!

Look at the different color, texture and size of these coleus varieties!  They are beautiful in the dappled sun (and I even like when some are allowed to bloom)!

See you in the gardens.
