Building of a Barn: Part 2

leave a comment »

It has been a busy few weeks at the Arboretum!  Earlier I shared with you some exciting news about construction of a new building at the Arboretum (https://cedarvalleyarboretum.wordpress.com/2011/06/14/) and now we are just working on the final touches.  Stop by soon to visit our new space!

Here is a recap of the project:

Before construction could begin, MANY truckloads of dirt had to be hauled in to level the space.  A soil berm was also added to prevent storm water runoff.

The new barn is located on the southwest corner of the Arboretum.  The building sits perfectly between existing maple trees (left) and willow trees (right) – no trees had to be cut down.

Once the posts were placed, construction went very fast!

Electrical lines had to be trenched in to the barn from the southeast corner of the parking lot.

A few quick-thinking volunteers made 3×3 foot frames so we could make cement squares from the excess cement.  These squares will make up a walkway on the northeast side of the barn.

Putting on the finishing touches to the porch.

Only a few small details need to be finished on the barn.  The big project now is to clean up around the exterior and landscape the space.

Now we have SO MUCH extra space!  Currently, we store all our equipment in the Head House (right photo) – with barely any room to walk! What a tremendous difference this will make – many thanks to all the volunteers and funders who made this project possible!

See you in the gardens.
